Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and French President Emmanuel Macron are visiting the French-built Greek naval frigate Kimon in the port of Piraeus.
The Saturday morning visit is also being attended by the defense and deputy foreign ministers of both countries as well as Greek military commanders, including the chief of the Hellenic National Defense General Staff and the chief of the General Staff.
As part of Macron’s state visit to Athens, the two leaders will sign a text titled “Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Greece and France.”
The agreement covers defense, economy and development, investment, civil protection, migration, technology, environment, education and culture as well as cooperation within the framework of the EU and other international organizations.
The two leaders will then attend the signing of the renewal of the Strategic Relationship Agreement for cooperation in security and defense, at the Maximos Mansion, which includes a mutual defense assistance clause in the event that the sovereignty of either country is threatened.
This agreement is being renewed as it is nearing the end of its five-year term. The agreement will now be automatically renewed every five years, unless one of the two parties withdraws from it.
