The soaring fuel prices have turned more commuters in Athens to public transport, as data from the company operating the metro and the tram in the capital (STASY) show a considerable 12.3% annual increase in tickets punched last month.
This has taken the overall growth in tickets validated over the first quarter of the year to 6.9% on fixed-rail services year-on-year.
STASY officials adds to the growth factors the increased inspections and the fines imposed on fare dodgers, that grew 7.9% in January-March on an annual basis.
The metro (including the Piraeus-Kifissia line) and the tram serve 800,000 passengers daily in total.
