Athens metro passengers will have to wait a couple more years for air conditioning to be installed on some of the older trains that run on the busy lines 2 and 3.
These lines are serviced by first-generation trains, which have been in circulation since 2000, when the network was inaugurated, and are now 26 years old.
Beyond their age and millions of accumulated kilometers, these are the only trains in the fleet lacking air conditioning in the passenger compartments.
According to the operating company, STASY, such systems were not deemed necessary when the original supply specifications were drafted. While the installation of cooling equipment has been pending for years – leaving conditions inside the carriages extremely stifling during the summer – STASY is finally expected to announce a relevant tender soon.
