
A 19-year-old man who was hospitalized early this week after being diagnosed with meningitis has been extubated and spoke with his doctors, the head of the Panhellenic Federation of Public Hospital Employees (POEDIN), Michalis Giannakos, said on Friday.
Giannakos said the patient, a veterinary student at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, will remain in the ICU of Trikala Hospital, where he will be examined by a neurologist later in the day to determine his status.
The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki said in a press release that the student developed a high fever and headache on April 4, while at his family home in Thessaly where he had traveled for the Easter holidays.
The following day, he was admitted to the emergency department of Trikala Hospital, presenting additional symptoms, including decreased consciousness and neck stiffness.
Tests confirmed the presence of meningococcus, and the case was reported to Greece’s public health authority, EODY.
Tracing has been completed and close contacts have been prescribed a 10-day course of preventive antimicrobial treatment per EODY guidelines.
