A funeral service for legendary Greek goalkeeper Takis Oikonomopoulos, who passed away at 81 on Monday, will be held this Thursday at Agios Dimitrios Church in Kifissia, northern Athens.

His body will lie in repose from 10 a.m. on the day of the funeral, with the service scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m.

Oikonomopoulos, a historic figure in Greek soccer, played for Panathinaikos, including in the team that reached the 1971 European Cup final at Wembley Stadium, and also represented the Greek national team.

He had been admitted to hospital several days earlier, after suffering a stroke, and was being treated in intensive care.

His passing comes just days after the loss of another Panathinaikos legend, Mimis Domazos, captain of the iconic Wembley squad.
