The Sea Turtle Protection Society “Archelon” has announced that, for the first time, a green sea turtle nest has been documented on the island of Rhodes.
According to Archelon, this finding “marks a possible expansion of the species’ breeding area in the Mediterranean.”
The discovery was made in June 2024, during research conducted on the beaches of Rhodes as part of a sustainable tourism project funded by the TUI Care Foundation.
The nest was found in Apollakia Bay, on the western coast of the island. On June 22, traces of an adult green turtle were spotted, leading to a nest containing 86 eggs, of which 78 successfully hatched.
“The species is globally endangered, and this recent discovery is particularly important as it suggests a potential shift in the green turtle’s breeding areas, possibly due to rising sea temperatures linked to climate change,” Archelon stated in its annoucnement.
