Farmers from Gyrtoni, a town near Larissa, arrived with their tractors at the Region of Thessaly administrative building in Larissa on Monday to present their demands to the regional governor, Dimitris Kouretas.
A discussion took place in the Regional Council chamber, attended by various local officials.
The farmers urged regional authorities to proceed with flood protection projects and the restoration of embankments, as well as to accelerate the compensation process for damages to agricultural equipment and machinery caused by the September 2023 floods.
At the same time, they emphasized the need for the Region of Thessaly to pressure the government to initiate essential irrigation and drainage projects in the area.
Farmers also stressed “the urgent need to compensate for lost income,” warning that if immediate solutions are not found, “the countryside will face an even greater crisis.”
Kouretas acknowledged the hardships farmers are facing, stating that this year has been particularly challenging and that their protests are entirely justified.
Since late January, farmers across Greece have rolled out their tractors to protest against rising production costs, inadequate infrastructure and insurance regulations.
