Popular singer faces drink-driving charges

Singer Christos Mastoras, frontman of the popular Greek group Melisses, has been arrested and charged with reckless driving and driving under the influence in central Athens late Sunday night.

According to reports, the defendant, who was found to be heavily intoxicated, failed to stop at a police checkpoint but eventually stopped after encountering a second checkpoint nearby. He claimed he drove on because he did not realize he had been flagged down.

To support his defense, Mastoras reportedly told police that if he had wanted to avoid the checkpoint, he could have taken side streets instead of driving on a main road toward Omonia Square, where the second checkpoint was located.

After the charges were filed, he was detained for an expedited trial but is expected to request a latter date.
