Konstantis Tzolakis, the keeper who saved penalty after penalty last season in Europe to give Olympiakos the Conference League, saved the day once again for the Reds, who have now extended their lead at the top of the Super League table, as Panathinaikos downed AEK in the Athens derby.
Olympiakos won 2-1 at Atromitos on Sunday, with two goals scored in the first 25 minutes by Panagiotis Retsos and Ayoub El Kaabi. However before the first half ended Costinha conceded an own goal to set up a tense second half, that ended with Atromitos earning a penalty. Tom Van Weert took it, but Tzolakis beat him on the sixth minute of injury time.
Panathinaikos overcame the resistance of AEK at the Olympic Stadium of Athens with a 1-0 result to climb back up to second. A Fotis Ioannidis penalty kick late in the first half secured all three points for the Greens.
Aris and PAOK shared a goalless draw in a Thessaloniki derby that offered fans less than what it had promised.
Former Manchester United player Federico Macheda gave Asteras Tripolis a come-from-behind win at Levadiakos with a 94th minute goal, taking the Peloponnesian team up to joint fifth at the table.
In other weekend games, Panetolikos defeated OFI 1-0 and Athens Kallithea saw off Volos 2-0.
On Monday Panserraikos entertains Lamia.
Olympiakos leads the table with 43 points, Panathinaikos reached 39, AEK stayed at 37, PAOK has 34, Asteras and Aris have 28 and Panetolikos climbed to 26.
