A new draft law introduced at the weekend aims to improve trauma care by establishing a nationwide system for dealing with major injuries. The proposal outlines the creation of 18 Trauma Centers for severe cases, two Pediatric Trauma Centers in public hospitals and Trauma Stations in health centers and rural clinics.
The law’s primary goal is to modernize Greece’s National Health Service (ESY) by enhancing the medical response to trauma, aiming to reduce mortality and disability caused by injuries.
Each Trauma Center will be categorized into four levels based on its capacity to handle injuries.
Level I centers will handle the most severe cases with a high risk of death or permanent disability, and will be equipped with the necessary facilities and medical professionals.
Additionally, the law proposes the formation of a National Trauma Committee to oversee the system’s effectiveness and continuous medical training.
Public consultation for the law is open until January 13.
