Heavy rain impacts western Greece, 5 people rescued in Agrinio

Fire brigade crews rescued and relocated five persons whose lives were endangered by heavy rainfall in the wider Agrinio region, western Greece, on Saturday.

Crews also conducted eight water pumping operations to remove water from flooded ground floors and basements caused by excessive water accumulation and torrent overflows in the Agrinio area.

The deputy regional governor of Etoloakarnania, Thanasis Mavrommatis, described the overall situation as being under control.

“Machinery is working continuously at torrents to clear debris from the heavy rainfall, as well as on numerous road sections to remove soil deposits and debris,” the official said.

Road infrastructure issues and landslides caused by the downpour were reported along various stretches in the Etoloakarnania region, including from Agrinio to Prousos, Aggelokastro to Klisorevmata, and Kallithea to Labiri, while major water build-up was reported in the areas of Megali Hora, Neapoli and Agios Konstantinos.

Parts of the road network in the nearby Achaia region of northwestern Peloponnese were affected by heavy rainfall, falling debris, and frost, police authorities reported.

This latest weather scare comes just over a fortnight after a heavy storm claimed the lives of two men on the island Lemnos in the north Aegean, before heading south to devastate infrastructure on Rhodes.
