Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ announcements on government intervention to address issues within the banking sector are expected to dominate Sunday’s fifth and final day of parliamentary debate on the 2025 state budget, to culminate with a vote on the budget.
In the lead-up to the budget debate, Mitsotakis has highlighted concerns over high banking fees, low deposit interest rates, and slow housing loan approval. He has noted that the response from banks, after being told to take action, has not been satisfactory, meaning government action can be expected “to address the core problems.”
The leaders of all nine political parties represented in Parliament will take the podium during Sunday’s final day of the budget debate, in order of smallest to biggest, based on seats held.
National Economy and Finance Minister Kostis Hatzidakis is scheduled to deliver a speech between those of the main opposition socialist PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis and Prime Minister Mitsotakis, heading the conservative New Democracy party, who will be the final speaker before voting begins.
The process, a roll-call vote, is traditionally regarded as a vote of confidence in the government.
