Athina Onassis, granddaughter of Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, has made a headline-grabbing return to the spotlight of international show jumping with the purchase of a seasoned competition horse reportedly worth €1.2 million.
According to a report aired on Greek television and picked up by Harper’s Bazaar Greece, the heiress has acquired Cossinelle, a show jumper with a long record on the international circuit.
Who is Cossinelle?
Cossinelle is a Holsteiner, the German breed long prized by top riders for producing show jumpers with power, scope and the athleticism needed at the highest levels of the sport.
The horse is far from a newcomer. Cossinelle has reportedly logged 128 competition starts, with two wins on its record, giving Onassis a mount with substantial big-arena experience rather than a young prospect still to be developed.
Records from the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) show the change of ownership was registered on 2 October 2026. The horse’s previous owner was reportedly a Ukrainian businessman.
A lifelong passion
The purchase is significant given how central equestrian sport has been to Athina Onassis’s life. Riding since childhood, she went on to compete at international level in show jumping, building a career in the saddle that has often kept her name in the sporting pages as much as the society columns.
Onassis has not publicly commented on her plans for Cossinelle, and no details have emerged about which competitions she may target. Still, a seven-figure investment in an experienced international show jumper has inevitably sparked speculation about a renewed push on the circuit.
