Turkish Primary School Republic Day Play: Children in Demon Masks Wrapped in Greek, British Flags Spark Online Backlash

Photos from a Turkish elementary school’s 29 October Republic Day performance have gone viral, drawing criticism. The play reenacted the founding of the Republic and the 1919–22 War of Independence, including the Greco-Turkish conflict. Pupils representing opposing forces wore devil and monster masks while draped in Greek, British, Italian, and other foreign flags. Turkish-side children wore only Turkish flags with no masks. A Scottish parent of British pupils at the school publicly expressed shock, noting foreign-flag children were later covered by the Turkish flag while her children watched. The images have fueled debate on historical education and national stereotypes in Turkish schools.
