US says the Fort Hood gunman’s execution will be shown live – Greek City Times

The execution of Nidal Hasan, the army psychiatrist who killed 13 people at Fort Hood in 2009, will be broadcast live, a US war department official said on Thursday.

Hasan, an American Muslim of Palestinian origin, opened fire on 5 November 2009 at the medical centre of the Texas base. Twelve of the dead were soldiers. Dozens were wounded. He was described as a lone wolf loyal to al-Qaeda, and said he wanted to stop troops deploying to wars in Afghanistan and Iraq that he called illegal. He was shot during the attack and is partly paralysed. A court-martial sentenced him to death in 2013.

The official, speaking to Agence France-Presse on condition of anonymity, said the execution “will be broadcast live,” and that details would follow. In a video posted on Wednesday by an account linked to the Pentagon, war secretary Pete Hegseth said Hasan “will be shot by soldiers, as he deserves, and we will make sure the world is able to see it. It will be public.”

If it goes ahead, it would be the first execution carried out by the US armed forces since 1961.
