Greece freezes assets of doctors held over Giorgos Mazonakis death – Greek City Times

Greek authorities have frozen the assets of two doctors held over the death of singer Giorgos Mazonakis and opened checks for four possible financial crimes.

Charalambos Vourliotis, head of Greece’s anti-money laundering authority and a former Supreme Court deputy prosecutor, issued the freeze order, which has been sent to prosecutors.

The order covers the married couple identified in local media as doctors Ilias Theodoropoulos and Ioanna Gaka. It includes a safe deposit box at a bank branch in Kolonaki, central Athens, near their practice. Officials have also asked the land registry about properties and insurers about investment products. Any further assets found can be frozen.

The financial probe runs with the criminal inquiry into Mazonakis’s death on 9 September. The 54-year-old suffered cardiac arrest during plasmapheresis — removal, filtering and return of blood plasma — at the couple’s private Kolonaki practice. He was later pronounced dead at an Athens hospital. An initial autopsy did not fix the cause; further lab tests were expected.

The doctors were remanded in September on charges of homicide with possible intent by omission. They deny wrongdoing and blame emergency medical staff.

The authority is also examining signs of aggravated fraud, unlawful practice of medicine, tax evasion and money laundering. A report will go to the competent prosecutor when the investigation ends.
