Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said Greece can attract foreign investment if it stays credible, speaking on Thursday at the opening of a new mine at Skouries, in Halkidiki, by Eldorado Gold and its Greek subsidiary Hellas Gold.

He called the project a vote of confidence in the economy, and “a country that can attract foreign investors with credibility.” Greece, he said, has to keep consistency and clear rules.
The mine could open the way for more investment in northern Greece, which he described as holding mineral wealth that has not been used. He also pointed to government plans to start extracting natural gas, the first such production in 40 years.
Talks with the company, he said, changed the investment plan, tightened environmental conditions and added measures for mining waste. The project has taken more than $2 billion, and may be the largest foreign productive investment in Greece in recent decades.
Mitsotakis said local support matters, and that the mine should benefit both the region and the national economy. It will produce copper as well as gold. He called copper a critical material for the green transition, including electric vehicles and phones, and said that with supply chains under strain, making such materials in Europe is part of keeping industry competitive.
