A 58 year old doctor held in pretrial detention over the death of Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis is seeking a fresh forensic examination of his cellphone as he attempts to distance himself from his wife, who is also a defendant in the case.
Through his lawyers, the doctor has asked the investigating magistrate to order Greece’s forensic investigation division to carry out a detailed examination of his phone.
The defence wants investigators to search for deleted messages, photographs, files and other data from the period considered critical to the case.
They are also asking investigators to check whether the device contains any references to the words “sedation” or “Mazonakis.”
The doctor denies communicating with Mazonakis and rejects any suggestion that he knew about a plan to sedate the singer during a medical procedure.
His legal team is seeking to use the cellphone examination to establish whether there is any digital evidence connecting him to such a plan or to communications concerning Mazonakis.
The request comes as investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death and the roles allegedly played by those involved.
The doctor is expected to seek his release from pretrial detention once toxicology results are submitted to the investigating magistrate.
The results could become a significant element in determining the next steps in the investigation.
The case remains under investigation, with the defendants presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty by a court.
