Bayside to Fly Easter and Greek Independence Day Flags in 2027 – Greek City Times

Bayside Council will amend its 2027 street flag programme to mark both Easter and Greek Independence Day, after the two dates fall in the same week.

Greek Independence Day is Thursday 25 March 2027. Good Friday is 26 March and Easter Sunday is 28 March. Council said the overlap meant both occasions should be recognised on the same run of flags.dia

The change covers 10 flagpoles on Bay Street, Brighton-Le-Sands, a commercial strip that already hosts other cultural displays through the year. Installation and removal dates have been adjusted so the extra flags stay inside the approved budget.

Mayor Edward McDougall said the amendment “reflects Council’s ongoing commitment to celebrating the cultural diversity of the local community while maintaining responsible management of public assets.”

“Bayside is proud of its rich multicultural community and the important traditions that are celebrated across our city,” he said. “The updated Street Flag Program ensures both Easter and Greek Independence Day are appropriately recognised during this unique calendar overlap.”

The decision follows a 27 May 2026 notice of motion arguing that Easter had been left out of a programme that already marked Christmas and other cultural events. Council endorsed the motion and then widened the 2027 schedule to cover both dates.
