Six prisoners were injured, one seriously, after a violent clash broke out at Domokos Prison in central Greece on Tuesday afternoon, September 29.
Prison officers and security forces moved quickly to contain the confrontation and prevent further violence. Ambulances from Greece’s National Emergency Aid Centre (EKAB) transported the injured prisoners under tight security to Lamia Hospital.
Doctors and medical staff immediately treated the prisoners and worked to stabilise their condition. One of the injured reportedly remains in extremely serious condition.
Clash between two prisoner groups
The confrontation involved two groups of prisoners of Algerian and Syrian origin.
Authorities have yet to establish what triggered the violence. The incident has raised particular concern because it took place in the same prison wing where a similar violent incident occurred only days earlier.
The repeated clashes have highlighted tensions between different groups inside the prison and raised questions about security in the facility.
Authorities investigate possible improvised weapons
Prison authorities have launched an internal investigation to determine how Tuesday’s clash began and whether the prisoners used improvised weapons.
The Domokos Police Department is also conducting the preliminary investigation into the causes and circumstances of the incident and is preparing a case file.
Authorities are now examining the events leading up to the confrontation, including how the two groups came into conflict and whether prisoners had access to improvised weapons.
