Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has arrived in the United States for a programme combining technology, investment and diplomatic meetings ahead of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
His US visit begins in San Francisco on Monday and Tuesday, where he is scheduled to meet technology executives and members of the Greek community working in Silicon Valley. He will then travel to New York, where he will address the UN General Assembly on Thursday, September 24. The UN’s high level week runs from September 22 to 29.
Silicon Valley focus
Mitsotakis will visit the headquarters of Nvidia and Tesla on Monday, followed by an appearance at an Endeavor Greece event titled “The Future of AI Elsewhere”.
The programme reflects the government’s focus on artificial intelligence, technology and attracting international investment to Greece.
On Tuesday, Mitsotakis will meet San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie before travelling to Stanford University, where he is scheduled to speak at a closed event hosted by the Hoover Institution. Former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is also expected to participate.
Investment takes centre stage in New York
Investment will be a major theme of Mitsotakis’ meetings in New York.
He is expected to participate in a roundtable with more than 30 institutional investors with exposure to Greece and major Greek companies. He will also meet senior executives from major international financial institutions, with discussions expected to cover developments in energy, defence, technology and services.
The Greek government is expected to highlight economic growth, fiscal stability, structural reforms and the increase in foreign direct investment as part of its pitch to international investors.
Mitsotakis will also present Greece as a potential base for international companies seeking regional operations, including through the country’s tax framework for senior executives.
UN meetings and global issues
After arriving in New York, Mitsotakis will hold a meeting with UN Secretary General António Guterres at UN headquarters before addressing the General Assembly on Thursday afternoon.
He will also participate in an artificial intelligence event at Columbia University.
On Wednesday, the Greek prime minister is scheduled to attend the launch of the global OceanEye alliance, co chaired by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
The European initiative focuses on improving ocean and sea monitoring through satellites and digital models, with the aim of strengthening environmental and climate data while supporting European technology development.
Mitsotakis will also attend a luncheon for the Greek diaspora, co hosted by 28 Greek American organisations, including AHEPA, HALC, PSEKA, AHI, HANC and HACC. Members of the Greek diaspora are expected to be honoured during the event.
During the UN General Assembly week, Mitsotakis is also scheduled to meet foreign leaders, major international media organisations and representatives of major American Jewish organisations.
His US programme will conclude on Friday with a live interview on Bloomberg Television.
The visit comes as world leaders gather in New York for the 81st UN General Assembly, with artificial intelligence, international security, climate issues and global cooperation among the major themes of this year’s high level week.
