Greek long jumper Miltiadis Tentoglou claimed another major title on Saturday, winning the men’s long jump at the first World Athletics Ultimate Championship with a leap of 8.35 metres.
The 28-year-old double Olympic champion held off Bulgaria’s Bozhidar Saraboyukov by a single centimetre (8.34m) at the National Athletics Centre in Budapest. Switzerland’s Simon Ehammer took bronze with 8.07m. Tajay Gayle of Jamaica, who had beaten Tentoglou at the recent Diamond League Final in Brussels, finished fifth with 7.90m.
The new invitational event brought together the world’s top athletes for a three-day meeting with a large prize pot. Tentoglou earned $150,000 as event winner. The competition used a shortened format: after two rounds the top six advanced, then the top four received a fourth and final attempt. Tentoglou’s 8.35m, produced early, proved decisive.
Budapest has been a happy hunting ground for the Greek star. He won the 2023 World Championships there with 8.52m. This latest victory adds the Ultimate title to two Olympic golds (Tokyo 2021 and Paris 2024), a world outdoor title, two world indoor titles, and a record four consecutive European outdoor championships.
The winning mark was well short of Tentoglou’s season and personal best of 8.66m, set in July at the Greek Championships in Volos when he equalled the national record. Consistency across a long season still carried him to first place among the elite field.
Tentoglou remains the world’s leading long jumper and one of the most decorated athletes in the event’s history. Greek fans continue to celebrate another trophy from an athlete who has delivered major titles with remarkable regularity.
