Olympic champion Miltiadis Tentoglou won the men’s long jump at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest with a best jump of 8.35 metres, ending his season with victory and a $150,000 prize.
The Greek Olympic champion from Tokyo and Paris entered the competition determined to finish the season on a high after losing the Diamond League title at the final in Brussels.
Tentoglou opened with 8.16m before taking advantage of windless conditions on his second attempt to produce the winning 8.35m.
The Ultimate Championship uses a different format from traditional long-jump competitions. After the opening two attempts, only the top six athletes advance to a third round. Tentoglou led the field with 8.35m, followed by Bulgaria’s Bozhidar Saraboyukov at 8.09m and Switzerland’s Simon Ehammer at 8.07m.
Tentoglou then jumped 8.27m in his third attempt, keeping him among the top four and securing a place in the fourth and final round. Saraboyukov followed with 8.17m, while Ehammer remained on 8.07m and Anvar Anvarov held fourth place with 7.94m.
Tentoglou fouled his fourth attempt, leaving the door open for his rivals.
Saraboyukov responded with an 8.34m jump to move into second place, while Ehammer and Anvarov both fouled their final attempts.
That left Tentoglou as the first-ever Ultimate Championship winner in the men’s long jump, completing his season with another major victory.
Saraboyukov finished second with 8.34m, while Ehammer took third with 8.07m.
