Australia survived one of the most dramatic finishes in women’s basketball history, beating Italy 82-80 at Berlin Arena to reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
The Opals appeared to have the game under control when they led 66-40 in the 28th minute. But Italy produced an extraordinary comeback that left almost 14,000 fans in Berlin stunned.
The Italians gradually cut the deficit before Veronica hit an incredible three-pointer with 67 seconds remaining to level the scores at 77-77.
Italy then had a chance to take the lead with 50 seconds left but failed to convert. At the other end, Alanna Smith put Australia back in front 79-77 with 24 seconds remaining.
The drama continued. Zandalasini’s shot bounced three times around the rim before falling out. Australia immediately drew a foul and made two free throws to lead 81-77 with eight seconds remaining.
Italy refused to give up. A remarkable three-pointer from Blaisigh cut the deficit to 81-80, leaving Australia with just four seconds to protect its lead.
Borlase stepped to the free-throw line and missed her first attempt before making the second to put Australia 82-80 ahead.
Italy still had one final chance.
Pasa raced the length of the court in just four seconds and, with no Australian defender able to stop her, launched a left-handed lay-up.
The ball agonisingly travelled around almost the entire rim before falling out.
Australia had survived.
Italy dominated the third quarter 31-13, producing a comeback that seemed almost impossible after trailing by 26 points. But the Italians could not complete one of the greatest comebacks in tournament history.
The extraordinary finish left commentators asking the obvious question: where had this Italy been for the first 30 minutes?
Australia now advances to the quarter-finals, where it will face Spain.
