Three firefighters have lost their lives while fighting wildfires in southern Greece on 29 July 2026, in separate incidents in Laconia and on the island of Crete.
In Rethymno, Crete, two firefighters died during operations against a major wildfire in the Krya Vrysi area of the Municipality of Agios Vasileios. The men, reported to be in their mid-20s and late 50s, were found near their fire vehicle after becoming trapped by the flames. The Fire Service said they “fell heroically in the line of duty” while protecting lives, property and the natural environment.
The blaze, fanned by strong winds, spread rapidly across low vegetation and multiple fronts near the villages of Krya Vrysi, Melambes and Sachtouria. Authorities issued successive 112 emergency messages ordering evacuations of several settlements. More than 100 firefighters, dozens of vehicles, ground teams and aerial support were deployed as the fire remained difficult to control.
Separately, in Aggeranos near Gythio in Laconia, a 27-year-old firefighter was found without vital signs by colleagues outside the active fire perimeter, still carrying his equipment. He was transferred to the General Hospital of Sparta, where his death was confirmed. Initial assessments point to possible pathological causes, as the fire was already in recession when he was located, though authorities have not ruled out other factors.
The Fire Service expressed deep sorrow in both cases and offered sincere condolences to the families and colleagues of the fallen firefighters.
The tragedies occurred on a demanding day for emergency services, with multiple active wildfires also reported on Paros, Lesvos and other areas of Greece amid high fire risk conditions.
