Greece recorded a slight rise in live births during the first quarter of 2026, according to provisional data released today by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT).
A total of 15,946 live births (8,184 boys and 7,762 girls) were registered between 1 January and 31 March 2026. This marks an increase of 57 births, or 0.4%, compared with 15,889 live births (8,182 boys and 7,707 girls) in the same period of 2025.
Stillbirths fell to 96, a 3% decrease from the 99 recorded in Q1 2025.

Compared with the first quarter of 2025:
- January: +2.6%
- February: –2.9%
- March: +1.2%
Greek vs Foreign Mothers
The ratio of live births to Greek mothers versus foreign mothers improved to 9.5 to 1 in Q1 2026, up from 8.9 to 1 a year earlier.
Regional Picture
Births rose in seven of Greece’s 13 administrative regions (based on the mother’s place of permanent residence). The largest absolute increases were recorded in:
- Thessaly (+62)
- Peloponnese (+56)
- Central Macedonia (+31)
The steepest declines occurred in:
- Central Greece (–81)
- Attica (–32)
- Ionian Islands (–31)
