E-scooter drivers are racking up traffic violations as police turn their attention to the relatively recent addition to Greece’s personal transport mix, data showed Monday.

A police statement said that a focused traffic police crackdown on e-scooters in the Greater Athens region from Thursday to Sunday resulted in 127 people being fined for not wearing a mandatory crash helmet – and eight for drunken driving. A total 397 people were stopped for inspection.

Nationwide, police also said Monday, e-scooter riders figured prominently on a list of violations for driving without a crash helmet. In the week of April 27, 1,568 people were fined nationwide for riding a motorbike or e-scooter without head protection, and nearly one in three – 449 – were on e-scooters.
