An 89-year-old man arrested after wounding five people in two shootings in Athens on Tuesday has been remanded in custody after testifying before an investigating magistrate.
The suspect opened fire with a shotgun at a branch of EFKA, wounding an employee in the leg. He then travelled by taxi to a courthouse, where he fired several more shots, lightly injuring four female court clerks.
He has been charged with multiple counts of attempted murder, along with lesser offences.
According to reports, the suspect told the investigator that he had not intended to kill anyone and had therefore aimed at his victims’ legs. He reportedly said his actions were driven by anger over a pension dispute and by the treatment he encountered while trying to resolve it.
His lawyer, Vassilis Noulezas, submitted a request for a psychiatric assessment and asked that his client be detained in a psychiatric facility.
Noulezas said the suspect had apologized for the shootings and had expressed his intention to compensate each of the five injured victims with €2,000 to help cover hospitalization and recovery costs.
