Four inmates and three guards at a prison on the southern island of Crete were treated for smoke inhalation early Saturday after prisoners seeking a change of quarters set fire to their cell, officials said.
The incident occurred late Friday after the four prisoners who shared a cell at the prison near Agia in the Hania area asked guards to be moved elsewhere in the penitentiary due to strained relations with other inmates in their wing.
Guards reportedly said they would look into the matter after the evening roll-call, whereupon the inmates set fire to a mattress in their cell in protest. The ensuing smoke soon started to choke them, so guards were called and put out the flames with a fire extinguisher before they could spread to adjoining cells.
Three guards also required treatment after inhaling smoke.
All seven were released from hospital Saturday.
