Tsipras revisits crisis in bid to reclaim the Left

[InTime News]

Alexis Tsipras’ decision to reopen a decade-old political controversy has raised fresh questions about his strategy, which had seemed aimed at centrist voters.

The former prime minister argued that his government should have moved to close Greek banks immediately after winning the January 2015 election, rather than allowing creditors to use liquidity pressure during bailout negotiations.

Critics said the intervention appeared more emotional than strategic, giving conservative opponents an opening to revive attacks linked to the financial crisis.

Some analysts, however, see a more calculated shift. Tsipras, who has said he plans to launch a new party by September, appears to be repositioning himself on the left. In private discussions, he has argued that the center has effectively shrunk – or has been largely consolidated by PASOK – leaving the left as the primary space for political expansion.
