Livestock theft a growing concern in Thessaloniki area

Livestock thefts are becoming an increasing concern in the Thessaloniki prefecture, with two major incidents recorded within just one month.

In Nea Mesimvria, unknown individuals broke into a barn just days ago, cutting chains, breaking locks, removing doors, and damaging the barn’s facilities. They stole a total of 40 animals, including sheep and lambs, loading them onto trucks before fleeing, according to the farm’s 47-year-old livestock farmer. He told SKAI that the theft caused financial losses exceeding €4,000.

Early last month, another livestock farmer in the village of Nymfopetra fell victim to a similar crime. According to his comments to SKAI, security cameras captured masked perpetrators carrying animals on their backs after breaking into the barn. The farmer said they specifically selected which goats to take.

Authorities have yet to report any arrests.
