Johann Williams, a 20-year-old man with relatives in Luxembourg, has been missing since February 13 after reportedly attempting to summit the 2,000-meter-high Gingalos mountain in Crete.
Johann regularly visited Luxembourg, where his father resides in Rollingen, but had been staying in Heidelberg for his studies. His father’s partner, Pascale Schiltz, who has two children with him, mentioned that Johann would frequently visit the Grand Duchy every other weekend.
“He’s an avid trail runner,” said his family. “He’s currently studying in Heidelberg and decided to take a trip to Crete to run in the mountains.”
Johann’s family last heard from him on February 13, when his sister spoke with him. Since then, there has been no word from him. Surveillance footage shows Johann leaving a parking lot and heading toward the Samaria Gorge.
Rescue teams, with the help of helicopters, drones, and search dogs, have been working tirelessly to find him. Unfortunately, heavy snow and fog in the area have hindered their efforts.
“We tried to bring in international assistance to help with the search, but the Greek authorities have not granted these requests,” Pascale said.
As the search continues, the hope of finding Johann alive is dwindling. “We know the chances are slim, but we are determined to find him,” Pascale added.
Johann’s family, including his father, two sisters, and older brother, has joined the search efforts, with the added support of former military personnel. To aid in the search, they have launched a private fundraising campaign, which has raised enough funds to rent a helicopter for a four-hour search mission, costing €20,000.
The route up Gingalos is known for its difficulty, and the Samaria Gorge is officially closed during winter. Unfortunately, many tourists have tragically lost their lives while exploring the mountains of Crete.
