The Hellenic Police announced on Sunday the arrest of a Greek citizen who had attempted to sell an ancient amphora online.

According to the police, the suspect was arrested early Friday morning in Athens and was charged with multiple offenses, including violations of laws protecting antiquities and cultural heritage.

The investigation was launched after authorities identified an online advertisement offering an ancient pointed-bottom amphora for sale.

According to the Ministry of Culture, the amphora is classified as a Mendis-type vessel, dating back to the late 5th to early 4th century BC, and is protected under antiquities preservation laws.

As part of a covert operation, authorities arranged a meeting with the suspect in Athens, during which he attempted to sell the amphora, which he had stored in the trunk of his car.

The suspect was immediately apprehended and arrested. A subsequent body search and vehicle inspection led to the confiscation of the amphora.
