Athens police have arrested 82 individuals during a raid on an illegal casino operating in the city center.
Following intelligence reports and a period of surveillance, authorities launched the operation, uncovering an extensive monitoring system and concealed escape routes.
A 67-year-old man, acting as a lookout, was apprehended outside the establishment. He was found in possession of three remote controls, which were confiscated.
The casino’s main entrance was locked, and despite police identifying themselves and ordering those inside to open the door, there was no response. A judicial official was called to the scene, and only when the police tried to break the door did the individuals inside finally unlock the entrance.
Inside, officers discovered a fully equipped underground gambling den, complete with screens, roulette tables and specially designed gaming tables.
A total of 73 people were found in the main area, while an additional nine individuals were discovered hiding in a secret attic compartment, which led to an alternate exit.
Among those arrested was the establishment’s acting manager.
