JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon Lashes Out At Gen Z, Work-From-Home Practices, And Bureaucracy

Greek American Jamie Dimon, CEO of JP Morgan, expressed his frustration with Gen Z employees, work-from-home practices, and internal bureaucracy in a leaked audio recording obtained by Barron’s. Dimon’s expletive-laden rant highlights growing tensions surrounding remote work policies as companies grapple with post-pandemic work arrangements.

Dimon criticized what he perceives as the abuse of work-from-home privileges, particularly by younger employees, or “zoomers,” whom he accused of being unresponsive and unproductive. He complained about the difficulty of reaching employees on Fridays and expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of remote work, especially for training and maintaining company culture.

“Don’t give me this s— that work-from-home Friday works,” Dimon stated. “I call a lot of people on Fridays, and there’s not a goddamn person you can get a hold of. I’ve had it with this kind of stuff.”

The outburst follows employee pushback against JP Morgan’s recent mandate requiring a return to the office five days a week, a shift from the previous two-day work-from-home policy. Dimon argued that in-person work is crucial for collaboration and decision-making, and dismissed a staff petition against the new policy. He also suggested that employees unhappy with the change were free to leave the company.

Dimon extended his criticism to managers, accusing them of failing to manage remote work effectively and of abusing the privilege themselves. He described unproductive Zoom meetings where participants were distracted and disengaged.

Beyond work-from-home practices, Dimon also targeted internal bureaucracy, citing excessive committees and needlessly lengthy reports as examples of inefficiency. He vowed to streamline processes and reduce paperwork, acknowledging his own responsibility for the current state of affairs.

This incident comes amid a broader political backdrop of scrutiny towards corporate DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) policies and “woke” workplace practices, with companies like Disney and Deloitte reassessing their approaches.

JP Morgan declined to comment on the leaked recording.
