Seismic Activity Declines In Santorini-Amorgos Zone, Reports Seismology Lab

The Seismology Laboratory of the National Kapodistrian University of Athens has reported a decline in earthquake activity in the Santorini–Amorgos seismic zone, following weeks of heightened seismicity.

On February 13, more than 100 earthquakes were recorded in the region, with only two registering magnitudes of 4.0 or greater and none exceeding 4.5. According to a statement released on Friday by the university’s Interdisciplinary Committee for Risk and Crisis Management, seismic activity was primarily concentrated 10-12 km southwest of Anydros, where the strongest tremors were detected.

Notably, the short bursts of continuous microseismicity, which had been occurring frequently in recent weeks, were absent on February 13, indicating an overall decline in both the number and magnitude of earthquakes.

Since the onset of this seismic episode on January 26, the Seismology Laboratory has recorded over 17,500 earthquakes using advanced machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques. While seismic activity appears to be tapering off, experts continue to monitor the region closely for any further developments.
