Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace during his visit to Paris for the Summit on Artificial Intelligence Action.
The one-hour meeting covered a range of important topics, including defense, European competitiveness, and advancements in artificial intelligence.
Key Discussion Points
The two leaders addressed several matters related to European affairs, particularly in light of Donald Trump’s re-election as U.S. President and ongoing developments in the Eastern Mediterranean and Syria. Notably, the discussion turned to the Meteor missile sales, where Macron expressed support for Greece’s position. However, he clarified that France is not leading the sales initiative, as the Meteor missile system is produced by the multinational MBDA consortium. This follows Turkey’s interest in acquiring these missiles after being excluded from the F-35 program.
The meeting also focused on the need for increased fiscal flexibility for EU member states wishing to invest in defense, and both leaders agreed on the importance of enhancing defense cooperation within the European Union.
Meteor Missiles and Turkey’s Interest
The Meteor missile topic was already briefly touched on during a recent informal EU summit in Brussels. During that meeting, Macron did not present it as a concluded deal. Following his more recent talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, defense procurement matters were again raised. Despite these discussions, Greece and France maintain a strategic defense cooperation agreement, marking their bilateral relations as robust and independent of these developments.
Mitsotakis’ AI Strategy and Greece’s Role
At the AI summit, Mitsotakis highlighted Greece’s role as one of the first countries to develop a comprehensive national AI strategy. “We are also one of the seven European nations selected for the ‘AI Factory’ initiative, which aims to develop AI infrastructure across Europe,” Mitsotakis stated. Greece’s investments in AI are already attracting major tech companies that have set up data processing centers in the country.
The Greek PM also emphasized AI’s potential to revolutionize public administration and productivity while addressing concerns about AI’s effects on mental health, particularly for children and adolescents. Greece is taking a leading role in mitigating these impacts through policies targeting the effects of social media and AI-generated content.
Meeting with U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance
The summit will also mark the first opportunity for Mitsotakis to meet U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, who is participating in the summit alongside Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Vance is scheduled to speak at the summit and will also attend a dinner hosted by Macron. This will likely be Mitsotakis’ first informal meeting with Vance, who represents the U.S. at a time when tensions are rising between the EU and the U.S. over trade issues.
Greece’s Active Role in the AI Dialogue
At the heart of the summit is the competition for global leadership in artificial intelligence, with the U.S. and China at the forefront. Greece, however, is positioning itself as an active participant in the AI dialogue. Mitsotakis recently received a comprehensive AI strategy plan from a special advisory committee, which is already guiding Greece’s approach to AI development. As part of its broader efforts, Greece is working to establish the AI Factory and an annual AI ethics forum, where important discussions about AI’s impact, particularly on children, will be held in collaboration with institutions such as Harvard University.
