Sydney hospitality mogul Jon Adgemis has made a significant move towards paying down debts by contributing $400,000 to creditors. This payment is part of a multi-phase agreement to settle outstanding obligations from his former hospitality empire, which fell into administration late last year. Linchpin, a new hospitality operation led by industry veteran Terry Soukoulis, has taken control of several of Adgemis’ former venues as they rise from the ashes.
The first installment of a $1 million cash payment to creditors has been made, with Adgemis also agreeing to settle $6.7 million through a convertible note funded by Archibald Capital. These funds are expected to be generated by refinancing Adgemis’ ongoing pub and hotel renovations. These new financial arrangements come as Adgemis continues to oversee significant development projects, such as the 19-room boutique hotel The Flinders in Darlinghurst and the revitalization of venues like the Exchange in Balmain and the former Noah’s Backpackers in Bondi.
Sources close to Adgemis have revealed that further restructuring efforts are underway, including selling his Melbourne venues, such as the Saint, the Vine, and the Clifton. With a sharp focus on his Sydney portfolio, Adgemis is keen to concentrate his efforts on key regional developments.
Linchpin’s acquisition of several of Adgemis’ former venues, including the Empire Hotel in Annandale, marks the beginning of a new chapter for the properties. The company is also overseeing renovations at The Clifton Hotel and the Lady Hampshire Hotel in Sydney and plans to reopen the Bayswater Sydney Hotel as the Hotel Diplomat. Additionally, the group will manage the 50-room Noah’s Backpackers once renovations are completed.
Terry Soukoulis, the driving force behind Linchpin, emphasized that the company aims to draw a clear distinction between itself and Adgemis’ former operation. He stressed that Linchpin’s relationship with the former pub baron would be strictly tenant-landlord. Soukoulis also highlighted the involvement of renowned culinary expert George Calombaris, who advises on the food offerings at Linchpin’s venues.
Linchpin’s expansion, backed by distressed investment advisor Damien Hodkinson, former head of operations at Public Joanne Sproule, and Monaco-based family office Amina Capital, positions the group as a formidable player in Sydney’s hospitality sector. With nearly 130 staff and substantial revenue projections, Linchpin is poised for continued success as it revitalizes the legacy left by Adgemis and brings new energy to Sydney’s iconic pub and hotel scene.
