Ange Postecoglou Confident in Tel’s Long-Term Future at Spurs
Tottenham Hotspur have secured the signing of 19-year-old forward Mathys Tel on loan for the remainder of the 2024/25 season. The move is optioned to become permanent in the summer for just over £50 million.
Ahead of Spurs’ Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Liverpool, head coach Ange Postecoglou addressed speculation about Tel’s long-term future, expressing confidence that the French forward would remain in North London beyond his loan spell.
“He will play a significant part in our end to the season for sure and beyond,” Postecoglou said. “He will be a Tottenham player. I think he will show everyone he will be a Tottenham player in the next six months. I didn’t bring him here for six months.”
The Spurs boss also reflected on his role in convincing Tel to make the move, emphasizing his straightforward approach:
“There is something to be said for honesty and integrity. I think I have a pretty compelling story to tell because when I speak to players, I’m not trying to sell anything that doesn’t have plenty of evidence behind it. It’s not about smooth talking or selling. There’s a good story here that I really believe in. I speak with strong conviction that what I’m saying will come to fruition.”
What Can Spurs Expect from Mathys Tel?
Tel is expected to bring pace, versatility, and goal-scoring ability to Tottenham’s attack. Naturally a No. 9, he can also operate as a left winger when needed, offering Postecoglou tactical flexibility.
The young forward holds the record as Bayern Munich’s youngest-ever goal-scorer, having netted his first senior goal for the club at just 17 years and 126 days old in a 5-0 victory over Viktoria Cologne in 2022. Described as a “superb finisher” by Bayern teammate Thomas Müller, Tel has already showcased his potential at a high level.
With 16 goals and seven assists in 83 appearances for Bayern, he will now aim to make his mark in the Premier League and elevate his game further at Tottenham. He could make his debut in Spurs’ upcoming Carabao Cup clash against Liverpool, where fans will be eager to see what he can bring to their attacking setup.
