The Greek government has confirmed that it will proceed with PASOK’s request to establish a parliamentary inquiry into the Tempi train disaster.
The inquiry aims to investigate potential misconduct by former Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister, Christos Triantaopoulos, in handling the aftermath of the fatal collision.
Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday afternoon, State Minister Makis Voridis acknowledged PASOK’s request, stating that the government will initiate the procedure. “Your proposal asks to investigate Mr. Triantaopoulos for breach of duty. We are telling you that obviously, the procedure will be initiated,” Voridis said, adding that the government shares PASOK’s interest—“perhaps even more so”—in uncovering the full extent of actions taken after the tragedy.
Tensions Between PASOK and SYRIZA
The move has fueled political clashes, particularly between PASOK and the main opposition party, SYRIZA. The two parties exchanged barbs over case files and additional documents related to the investigation. SYRIZA MP Olga Gerovassili stated that her party was aware of the new evidence, while PASOK countered that it had not been formally announced in Parliament.
PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis took aim at SYRIZA’s Sokratis Famellos, accusing him of undermining his own MP, escalating tensions between the opposition parties.
With the government’s approval, the parliamentary investigation will now move forward, as Greece seeks accountability and transparency in one of its deadliest railway disasters.
