The Canadian Hellenic Congress has called on the Canadian government to reach out to its partners, including Greece and other European Union member-states, to counter the effects of tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump.

“It is imperative that our Federal government work in unity with our    provinces and territories, and for our provinces and territories to collaborate, in an effort to increase interprovincial trade. Moreover, we must reach out to European countries such as Germany and Greece, as well as Asian countries to export our oil and LNG products,” the association said in a recent statement.

It also urged Canadians to stop buying American products and traveling to the United States.

“It is time for all of us to rekindle our Canadian patriotism and to stand united and strong,” it said, rejecting Trump’s claims about the decision for the tariffs as “clearly delusional.”

“Since Donald J. Trump’s election to the US presidency the rhetoric and threats to Canada and other democratic and allied countries have increased exponentially. The US president has also shifted his isolationist agenda to an imperialist one and wants to take over through economic threats and even military force… President Trump’s threats do not sit well with Canadians,” the statement dated February 3 said.
