The plenary session of the Council of State will discuss next Friday the fines imposed by the Data Protection Authority due to the leak of personal data from the special electoral register of Greeks living abroad by former MEP Anna-Michelle Asimakopoulou.
Last March the records of some 25,000 voters living abroad were leaked to Asimakopoulou, who used the data in her election campaign ahead of the European elections in June 2024, without the prior consent of the voters.
Asimakopoulou emailed Greeks living abroad on March 1, the same day a separate message from the Interior Ministry informed expats they could cast their votes by post in the next election.
In May 2024, the independent authority imposed a fine of €400,000 on the ministry of the interior, €40,000 on Asimakopoulou, €30,000 on the New Democracy party and €10,000 each on the former organizational secretary for local government and crisis management of New Democracy, Aristodimos Koromilas and the party’s secretary for the diaspora at the time, Nikolaos Theodoropoulos.
All the fined parties appealed to the Council of State, requesting the annulment of the authority’s decisions.
The hearing for these annulment requests will take place in the grand plenary session of the Council of State, presided over by Michalis Pikrammenos.
Additionally, nine expatriates who received Asimakopoulou’s emails have intervened in support of the validity of the authority’s decisions.
