Greece is embarking on a massive €7.5 billion (approximately £6.4 billion) project to transform the site of the former Ellinikon International Airport into a futuristic city projected to boost the country’s economy and attract a million additional tourists annually.
Dubbed “Ellinikon,” this eco-friendly development aims to be a “zip code paradise,” blending stunning coastal views with state-of-the-art sustainable infrastructure.
The ambitious project, managed by Lamda Development, envisions a 15-minute city where everything from shopping and entertainment to work and leisure is easily accessible. Key features include:
- Greece’s first skyscraper: The Riviera Tower, a 50-story, fully sold-out luxury residential building, boasts being the tallest “green” seaside skyscraper in the Mediterranean, offering panoramic views of the Athens Riviera, the Acropolis, and Sounio.
- A sprawling sports park: Designed to attract world-class athletes, the park will provide extensive recreational opportunities.
- The Ellinikon Mall: A 100,000 square meter shopping and entertainment complex with 30,000 square meters dedicated to green spaces, promising a unique blend of retail, leisure, and work environments.
- Luxury residential areas: “Little Athens,” a collection of five luxury residential complexes featuring homes with up to five bedrooms, is the next phase of development.
The first phase of construction is expected to be completed by 2024, with the entire project slated for completion by 2037. Lamda Development CEO Odysseus Athanassiou estimates the project will create 80,000 jobs. Upon completion, Ellinikon is projected to contribute nearly 2.5% to Greece’s GDP and generate an additional €14 billion (approximately £11.7 billion) in revenue.
