An Athens urban railway train was evacuated on Friday afternoon after smoke started filling the carriages at the Moschato station in southern Athens.

The incident on Line 1, which happened on a train heading toward the southern port city of Piraeus, was due to a technical failure which caused smoke to be emitted, probably while braking, the urban railway company STASY said.

The train was withdrawn to the depot for technical inspection. The incident caused some delays until traffic was restored, it added.

ISAP has faced a series of safety issues, with breakdowns – such as faulty doors, air conditioning and electrical equipment – often reported. The scheduled renovation of 14 outdated trains is also lagging behind schedule.
