Sir Christopher Nolan is embarking on what may be the most ambitious project of his career—an adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey.

The story follows Telemachus, son of Odysseus, as he sets out to uncover the fate of his father ten years after the fall of Troy. Telemachus, played by Tom Holland, is faced with a growing number of suitors vying for his mother Penelope’s hand in marriage, led by the ruthless Antinous (Robert Pattinson). Odysseus, however, is not dead—he has been held captive by the nymph Calypso (Lupita Nyong’o), who refuses to let him go. The gods intervene, with Zeus sending Hermes to demand Odysseus’s release, but that is only the beginning of his trials. Poseidon, furious over Odysseus’s blinding of his son, the Cyclops Polyphemus, seeks revenge, making Odysseus’s return home a perilous odyssey filled with treacherous encounters, from the terrifying Sirens to the deadly whirlpool Charybdis and the monstrous Scylla.
Odysseus’s journey will also take him to the Phoenician princess Nausicaa, where, in true Nolan fashion, much of the film’s grand storytelling will unfold through Odysseus recounting his adventures. These flashbacks will showcase legendary battles, hallucinogenic encounters with the Lotus-Eaters, and the cunning tactics that define the hero’s legacy.
Eventually, after years of struggle and divine intervention, Odysseus returns home, where he and Telemachus devise a plan to eliminate the suitors and reclaim their kingdom in an epic, bloody showdown.

With a staggering budget of $250 million, The Odyssey will be Nolan’s most visually ambitious film to date. The production is making use of groundbreaking IMAX technology, ensuring that the grandeur of Homer’s epic will be fully realised on the big screen.
Filming locations include the United Kingdom, Morocco, and the Aeolian Islands of Italy, particularly Favignana, a location believed to have inspired elements of Homer’s original tale. These diverse landscapes will serve as the backdrop for Odysseus’s perilous travels, bringing the Mediterranean world to life with an authenticity rarely seen in modern cinema.
