The mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, participated in the 14th Direct Dialogue between the mayors of European capitals and the European Commission on Friday in Warsaw, advocating for an enhanced role of cities in managing EU funds and deciding which projects receive financing.

A declaration was signed by 23 cities, committing to safe, resilient, and well-prepared European urban areas in times of crisis.

Doukas emphasized the critical challenges faced by modern cities and called for governance centered on inclusive urban transformation.

“Athens is undergoing a transformation to address the challenges that contemporary metropolises face, such as overtourism, the climate crisis, and social inclusion,” he said.

“Cities with a human face are a fundamental requirement of our times. This approach to governance not only ensures social harmony but also seeks shared solutions to modern problems,” Doukas added.
