Almost one in five Greeks is unable to keep their home warm enough, the EUโs statistical arm Eurostat has said.
The highest shares of people unable to keep their homes adequately warm in 2023 were observed in Spain and Portugal (both 20.8%), followed by Bulgaria (20.7%), Lithuania (20.0%) and Greece (19.2%).
The latest figure represents a significant increase from the 17.1% of Greeks who said they could not keep their homes warm in 2020. In 2022, the Greek figure stood at 18.7%.

In recent years, the percentage of people unable to keep their homes warm has been increasing across Europe. For example, the EU average was 7.5% in 2020, 6.9% in 2021 and 9.3% in 2022 before reaching 10.6% in 2023.
By contrast, Luxembourg (2.1%), Finland (2.6%), Slovenia (3.6%), Austria (3.9%) and Estonia (4.1%) reported the lowest shares.
