Lignite transition plan for Western Macedonia, Arcadia stalled

The so-called Fair Growth Transition Program, a series of investments that would replace lignite production in the regions of Western Macedonia and Arcadia, has run up against the usual weaknesses of the Greek state.

Land uses have not yet been determined, infrastructure is inadequate, critical state services are understaffed and cooperation between the relevant ministries and agencies is practically non-existent.

Of the 16 emblematic investments in the field of technology (battery production, green hydrogen units, hydroponics units, etc) only four were in the program approved by the European Union in 2022, only one of which is being carried out.
