Turkey’s Pursuit Of Meteor Missiles Raises Concerns For Greece


Turkey’s potential acquisition of 40 Eurofighter Typhoon jets equipped with the advanced Meteor air-to-air missiles has sparked concerns from neighboring Greece. The proposed deal, spearheaded by London and BAE Systems, aims to bolster Turkey’s aerial defense capabilities, particularly against Greece’s recently upgraded air force.

Greece has been steadily enhancing its own air power, recently acquiring 24 Rafale fighter jets from France, a move that signified a strengthening of its strategic ties with Paris. This upgrade includes the integration of Meteor missiles, which significantly extends the operational reach and effectiveness of the Rafale fleet.

The Meteor missile, developed through a collaboration among six European nations – the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Sweden – is a state-of-the-art Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile (BVRAAM). This coalition grants France a potential veto power over the sale, given its involvement in the missile’s development.

Despite this, reports suggest that the United Kingdom has managed to ease French opposition, paving the way for Turkey to enhance its air force with the same cutting-edge technology that Greece currently possesses.

The Meteor missile’s exceptional performance is largely attributed to its advanced propulsion system, which utilizes a solid-fuel ramjet motor. This allows the missile to maintain high speeds, exceeding Mach 4, throughout its flight, providing a significant advantage over conventional missiles that slow down as they approach their target.

The missile’s active radar seeker, two-way data link, and sophisticated proximity fuze further enhance its accuracy and flexibility in dynamic combat scenarios. With an operational range exceeding 100 kilometers, the Meteor offers pilots the ability to engage adversaries from a safe distance, reducing the risk to themselves and their aircraft.

The integration of Meteor-armed Eurofighters into Turkey’s air force could mark a substantial shift in the regional military balance. The Meteor’s superior range and speed provide a decisive advantage in beyond-visual-range engagements, which is particularly crucial in the contested airspace over the Aegean Sea.

This capability could enable Turkish pilots to engage enemy aircraft long before they themselves are within range of most opposing air-to-air missiles, potentially deterring potential incursions and asserting control over critical air corridors.

In comparison, Greece’s fleet of Rafale jets, though advanced, may face significant challenges against Meteor-equipped Typhoons, as the Rafale’s primary BVR missile, the MICA, does not match the Meteor in terms of range and speed.

The deployment of such advanced systems is not without challenges, however. Effective utilization of the Meteor missile requires significant training and coordination among pilots, ground crews, and command centers to fully exploit its capabilities.

In response to this potential deal, Turkey continues to push forward with its own domestic missile development programs, seeking to produce indigenous solutions that could rival or exceed the Meteor’s performance. This strategic pursuit of advanced missile technology underlines Turkey’s commitment to securing and maintaining a robust and independent defense posture in an increasingly competitive regional landscape.
