According to sources cited by The Guardian, Koutoufides has been approached to run as an independent and is expected to make a decision on his candidacy soon, with the election scheduled for May 17.
This marks Koutoufides’ second foray into politics. He previously ran in last year’s Melbourne mayoral election, finishing fourth with 13% of the vote.
The Melbourne seat is currently held by Greens leader Adam Bandt.
